Why do binkies get such a bad rap? I don’t understand it. Binkies can be a breastfeeding mother’s best friend (sore boobs need a break from being sucked on for comfort only). It’s a total wives tale that they cause nipple confusion. In fact, binkies are often used to teach sucking skills to premature babies. Binkies help sooth a crying baby. Binkies decrease the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). And most importantly, I can take a binky away (unlike a thumb) when I’m ready to break the habit. Just don’t let your old child have a binky—it’s socially awkward, not to mention bad for their teeth and language development. I usually say start breaking the habit around 18 months (limit binkies to bed) and totally off by 2 years-old.
I like the Mam or Nook binkies. They have sizes that can grow with the child (better for the teeth).
